What is an ADU?



The accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, is also known as an in-law or mother-in-law unit, secondary dwelling unit, granny flat, or carriage house. An ADU has its own kitchen, living area, bath, and a separate entrance. An ADU may be attached to a house or garage, or it can also be built as a stand-alone unit, but it generally will use the primary house's water and energy connections. ADUs have myriad benefits, such as:

  • Creating a secondary rental income.
  • Increasing the occupancy of a given plot of land.
  • Creating more communal living while still providing autonomy and privacy for all residents.
  • People who may have once needed a large home–e.g., parents whose children have moved out–can move into the ADU and rent out the main home.

Site preparation and foundations are being completed while the unit is being built, so the whole job is finished sooner. We do not depend on a long list of trade contractors.
